THE ANCIENT SPIRITUAL REBELLION: The Biblical Background of Earthly Power

This chapter establishes the biblical and theological foundation for understanding earthly power, deception, and spiritual conflict within Pawns, Powers, and Principalities. Grounded in Sola Scriptura, it traces the biblical pattern of creaturely rebellion from the serpent’s deception in Eden and humanity’s organized self-exaltation at Babel to the idolatrous ambitions of earthly kingdoms and the unseen conflict associated with them in Daniel. Particular attention is given to Satan’s recurring strategies of distorting God’s Word, promoting autonomy, exploiting desire, counterfeiting freedom, cultivating idolatry, and seeking allegiance that properly belongs to God. The chapter examines Christ’s temptation, the New Testament doctrine of principalities and powers, Paul’s teaching on spiritual warfare, and Revelation 12’s portrayal of the ancient serpent as deceiver, accuser, persecutor, and ultimately defeated adversary. It carefully distinguishes explicit biblical teaching from theological inference, historical interpretation, eschatological application, and speculation, warning against assigning contemporary institutions, technologies, political actors, or secret organizations direct demonic identities without scriptural or historical warrant.
