Synopsis

Business strategy concerns the disciplined choices through which an organization defines where it will compete, how it will create and capture legitimate value, which capabilities it will build, what it will refuse to do, and how it will renew itself as conditions change. This chapter develops the general strategic-management foundation required before multinational strategy is studied in Chapter 15. It integrates purpose and objectives, macro-environment and industry analysis, Five Forces, competitor analysis, strategic groups, resources and capabilities, VRIO, dynamic capabilities, value chains, activity systems, generic strategies, corporate scope, diversification, vertical integration, alliances, strategic choice, scenario planning, execution, strategic control and renewal. Capitec Bank anchors the African analysis, illustrating how a focused low-cost simplicity logic can evolve into a broader financial-services ecosystem without losing strategic coherence; IKEA provides a comparative global case on affordability, trade-offs and omnichannel renewal. Christian moral reasoning treats strategy as accountable stewardship of power and resources, requiring truthful diagnosis, legitimate profit, human dignity, justice, service and responsibility for foreseeable consequences.
